U.S Open my eyes to golf

For some reason, I was really anticipating watching the most recent U.S. Open golf tournament. Keep in mind I’ve never sat down to watch golf ever. And Tiger Woods has been playing for years, so why all of a sudden would I have the urge to watch him now?

I don’t know if my tastes are changing, and perhaps I am starting to like watching a slow-paced sport like golf. Or maybe it was all the chatter on Twitter about the event, or the media’s coverage before the event happened.

I’m not quite sure exactly where this urge came from. All I know is, I needed golf, and I needed it now.

I think I’m finally starting to realize just how great Tiger Woods actually is. I mean, I’ve always known he’s practically God, but it’s one thing to know that, and entirely another to fully appreciate it. As sports legends go, my inner voice was telling me that if I don’t start watching him now, I may be missing the greatest professional athlete of my lifetime.

So what was watching golf for the first time like? I don’t know. I was never able to watch it, due to other obligations. But now that the result is in, and the drama subsided, I feel like I’ve missed something great. It’s almost like I knew the ending would be suspenseful, so unlike golf.

I can understand using a older browser would cause this message. But I am using Firefox 3. So web users not only get punished for using older browsers, but now we get punished for being responsible and upgrading our browsers.

I’d like a tool that collects articles from authors living in my area. Call it what you will, but if John Doe is a person I’ve never met or been aware of, and he lives in my area, and writes an article for A List Apart, I want to know about it.

This exact scenario occurred. I noticed an article on A List Apart from an individual whom I never knew about (through reading his blog, etc) who also lived in my area.

In this manner, the content I’m interested in (A List Apart) has an author living nearby whom I could potentially meet some day at a tech event, etc. I’d like to know that he’s writing articles on certain sites.

Some of my IM buddies have strange (and sometimes aggravating) behaviors. Here’s what they’ll do:

[2:33] Person: Hi

[2:33] Me: Hey there, how are you

[2:34] Person: Good, you?

[2:34] Me: Not bad, at work

[2:35] Person: Long time no talk? What have you been up to?

Me typing…

[2:35] ‘Person’ has signed off

They’ll just sign off without a trace, like a cord being yanked from the plug. Poof! Gone.

No “goodbye,” or “gotta go,” just gone. This is a repeated behavior that they’ll do every time - it’s not just one isolated incident.

I’m toying with the idea of only checking personal email on the road or at home during the evening. Let’s say I set aside an hour every evening to ready and reply to personal email. This reduces distractions during the day, allowing me to focus on important tasks.

I’d also include RSS feeds into that category.

The nice thing about being a developer is that you have the power to make your job easier. Any redundant, clerical tasks that weigh you down can always be automated, or pushed off to someone else, as long as there’s a safe, secure method for users to do it. You just have to create that.
